That boy’s mother, of course, wasn’t concerned with his daddy’s appetite for stuffing and shifted over his entire tinfoil plate of dinner towards her boy which he scoured clean of everything but its succotash and apple Betty before bolting from the table once he’d kissed his mother on the cheek and had left her stained with a blend of spit and gravy.

By that time, that Dunn and her husband weren’t what passes these days for close, which means they never loitered in the kitchen to fret together over the mortgage, rarely sat both in the front room of a night to watch TV and didn’t even share between them their plantation bed anymore as that Dunn had banished her husband to the guest room down the hall on account of his ceaseless twitching and his intermittent snoring. So once she’d gotten over her irritation at the fact that she’d gone to the trouble to heat his supper and he’d failed to show up to eat it, she pretty much managed to exclude her husband entirely from her thoughts as she was occupied just then with trying to figure how many chintz basswood leaves she’d be obliged to sell to get out of her Nova and back into a Saab.
